Bridge built over the Cavalos River, with a deck approximately 50 m long and 3 m wide. It probably forms part of the same road link as the Roman road of Pedra da Sé, serving as a connection between the Roman civitas of Bobadela and that of Viseu. It has only one arch with a perfect semicircular span, and the pavement that forms part of the deck is the result of intervention after the time of construction. It has been classified as a Property of Public Interest (IIP) since 1990, by Decree No. 163 of July 17, 1990.

Designated a National Monument since 1974, this structure retains the nine upright stones of its main chamber, which is three meters high, and the capstone (covering slab) practically intact. The access corridor to the chamber has 15 upright stones and preserves all the covering slabs, with the dolmen being inserted into a tumulus (or mound, which originally covered the entire stone structure of the monument) approximately 20 meters in diameter. Its construction is believed to have occurred during the Neolithic-Chalcolithic period (between the end of the Neolithic and the beginning of the Chalcolithic), corresponding to the end of the 4th millennium BC. The region where the Orca Dolmen is located shows traces of continuous human activity and occupation since the prehistoric period. It is situated in an area with orographic characteristics conducive to human settlement, being close to a watercourse (the Mondego River) and possessing vast hunting resources. We know that shepherding has been a source of livelihood and income for centuries for the populations of the region, situated on a livestock route between the highlands of the Serra da Estrela and the Mondego valley.

This Orca/Anta is part of a tour circuit: PREHISTORIC CIRCUIT OF FIAIS/AZENHA in Carregal do Sal. https://www.cm-carregal.pt/pages/1027?poi_id=129 ORCA/ANTA from PALHEIRA is located in the megalithic nucleus of Fiais/Ameal. It is a monument of considerable size, which can be placed, architecturally, within the large group of monuments of Beira. It has a polygonal chamber with nine pillars, with an elongated corridor. However, its peculiar characteristics make this monument the rarest and most representative example of the circuit, given that at a somewhat later and yet to be determined period, a considerable barn was built around its central structure, which is part of that farm. Thus, the dolmen remained incorporated within it and was used as a dwelling until the 1970s.

Along the cycle path, between Viseu and Tondela, you will find three catering establishments. Between Tondela and Santa Comba Dão there are none.

I also highly recommend this bike path, a real interstate for cyclists, with asphalt all the way and beautiful surroundings!

The Roman Bridge of Sumes, with its round arch, is a stone masonry structure measuring approximately 6.4 metres. It stands over the Cavalos River, in a natural setting, punctuated by enormous granite rocks and crisscrossed by dirt paths. This is where the fantastic Trilho dos Gaios begins (or ends), winding along the Cavalos River between several waterfalls and lush vegetation.

The Roman Bridge of Sumes stands over the River des Chevaliers, shrouded in mystery. Although its foundations appear to be Roman, the exact date of its construction remains uncertain. An inscription reading "80 AD" found on a nearby wall suggests its origin, but some historians believe it refers to an ancient spring. In the surrounding area, traces of medieval paving can still be seen. Regardless of the bridge's uncertain age, it is classified as a Property of Public Interest, having witnessed centuries of history.

Santa Comba Dão offers several significant historical sites. You can visit the Lapa da Orca Dolmen, one of Portugal's largest and best-preserved dolmens, designated a National Monument. Another notable site is the Roman Bridge of Sumes, a structure with ancient foundations over the Cavalos River. Within the town, explore the Mother Church of Santa Comba Dão with its Baroque façade, the 17th-century Casa dos Arcos, and the Antiga Residência Paroquial, which dates back to 1571.
Yes, Santa Comba Dão has options for families. The Ecopista do Dão, a scenic bike path on a former railway line, is excellent for family cycling. River beaches like Vimieiro River Beach and Reconquinho River Beach offer pleasant spots for relaxation and swimming during warmer months. The Lapa da Orca Dolmen can also be an interesting educational visit for older children.
The region is rich in natural beauty. You can enjoy panoramic views from the Outeirinho Viewpoint, which overlooks the Dão River, and the Pedra Talhada Viewpoint, offering vistas of the town center. The Dão and Mondego rivers themselves provide scenic backdrops. There are several walking and hiking opportunities. The hiking guide for Santa Comba Dão features routes like the moderate loop from Candosa that includes the Roman Bridge of Sumes and Vale de Gaios River Beach. You can also explore the charming Ribeira das Hortas with its wooden walkway or the medieval alleys of Bairro Alto.
Absolutely. The Ecopista do Dão is a highlight, offering almost 50 km of car-free cycling on a former railway line, crossing three municipalities with distinct colored paths. For more challenging rides, explore the road cycling routes or MTB trails around Santa Comba Dão, which include loops of varying difficulty.
For an authentic local experience, visit the Santa Comba Dão Municipal Market, which takes place every Wednesday morning (except the third Wednesday of the month). The Largo do Município, with its Town Hall and 1895 Fountain, and Largo do Rossio, featuring elegant noble houses, also offer a glimpse into the town's cultural and architectural heritage.
Santa Comba Dão is close to beautiful river beaches. The Vimieiro River Beach is often described as one of Portugal's most beautiful, offering a grassy area and a restaurant. Reconquinho River Beach also provides parking and dining options, though visitors should wear appropriate footwear due to the pebbly riverbed.
The Dão River Railway Bridge is a fully restored old railway bridge that is now an integral part of the Ecopista do Dão. It offers excellent views over the Dão River and is a popular spot for cyclists and walkers to pause and enjoy the scenery.
Yes, in addition to the Lapa da Orca Dolmen, you can also visit the Anta da Palheira. This megalithic monument, part of the Fiais/Azenha prehistoric circuit, is notable for its considerable size and unique history, having been incorporated into a farm and used as a dwelling until the 1970s.
The region's proximity to the Dão and Mondego rivers makes it ideal for outdoor activities, especially during spring and autumn when the weather is mild and pleasant for hiking and cycling. Summer is perfect for enjoying the river beaches, though it can be quite warm. Winter offers a quieter experience, but some activities might be weather-dependent.
A truly unique geological feature is the Mondego Bookshelf (Livraria do Mondego). This fascinating rock formation, carved over 400 million years, resembles books stacked on a shelf and can be found on the journey between Santa Comba Dão and Penacova.
The Casa da Cultura in Santa Comba Dão serves as a cultural hub, hosting various events including music concerts. Keep an eye on local listings for specific events during your visit to experience the town's vibrant cultural scene.
