Sölvesborg Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Sölvesborg is a town in Blekinge, Sweden, with historical roots in the Middle Ages, evidenced by the Nikolaikirche (c. 1300) and a medieval street layout in the city center. The area has been inhabited for 8000 years, as shown by the Ljungaviken dwelling, and includes Iron Age remains and the 6th-century Stentoften rune stone. In the mid-19th century, Sölvesborg prospered as a distillery center. Today, it's a popular summer tourist destination due to its attractive surroundings and festivals like Killebom (with a medieval market) and the Sweden Rock Festival.

Andrarum Alum Works Pan House Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Where you are standing in front of these ruins there was once an active industry. Several hundred people were employed with the production of alum at Andrarum Alum Works. Yellow smoke, smelling of sulphur, lay thick over the hill. In 1640 alum was manufactured for the first time in Andrarum and until 1929 when the Alum Works were shut down.

If you ask yourself now, what alum is: the scientific name is Potassium aluminium sulfate. It was used for dying yarn, tanning leather as well as for water purification and as a blood clotting agent. Today, alum is produced artificially.

Kiviksgraven

Highlight • Historical Site

Restored burial area from the Nordic Bronze Age (around 1400-1000 BC). The tomb with a stately diameter of 75m was used as a quarry for local construction work until 1748. From 1931 to 1933 there was a thorough excavation, which also found the remains of a Stone Age settlement under the hill, as well as large amounts of flint debris. Only teeth, bronze fragments and bone splinters were found from the Bronze Age. After the excavation, the grave was restored, but it is not known to what extent the restoration corresponds to the original condition. A comparison with contemporary graves suggests that the facility should be three times as high as the current 3.5 m. In 2021 the facility will be closed for restoration work.

If you are in the area, it is worth taking a look at the bridge and taking a walk to the island.

Small waterfall.

One of the entrances to the nature reserve. The map shows two official campsites. I couldn't find the one 7 km away (only private property). I couldn't clearly identify the one closer to the lake in the terrain either, but in the marked map area there is a picnic area where I camped. There were no problems. There is also a shelter near this picnic area, but in 2024 it was pretty dilapidated and overgrown.

Of course it doesn't roll as well as asphalt, but it was still easy to ride. The route mostly leads through thick forest, a gift in midsummer
