Upon entering the grounds, you will immediately discover the magnificent historic Arcen Castle on your left. It was built in the mid-17th century by order of the Dukes of Guelders on the remains of an earlier castle. The current castle dates back to the Baroque period, a stylistic period characterized by lush forms, expressiveness, and the pursuit of splendor and grandeur. In the 19th century, a devastating fire destroyed the castle's symmetry, destroying its entire left wing. Although part of this wing was rebuilt in 1888, the original U-shape was never fully reconstructed. From the beginning of the 16th century until the 1930s, the castle changed hands several times. The last resident, Professor Deusser, left the castle with his family in 1931. In 1976, the castle was given a new lease of life when the Limburg Landscape Foundation acquired the Arcen estate and its historic buildings, including the then-dilapidated castle. We were there on April 4th and had a small problem. Due to the high water level, the "White Mountain" was inaccessible. Therefore, our tip: keep right shortly after the "Loop Bridge" (the path is marked in black). You'll then come to a gate with a lock. The wire fence was not electrified, so crossing is possible even for older people. Follow the trail behind it. From the other side, leave the mountain to the left and continue to the second gate. There are numerous other beautiful trails, though. We'll be back, and if all goes well, we'll make our hike available. Until then, have fun; it's a great area.
