May 2, 2026, Fort Landau

The Landau Fort is an important part of the former French fortress, built between 1688 and 1691 by the fortress builder Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. It is located north of the city on the Kaffenberg and is accessible today as a recreational area and historical monument. The fort was built as an independent outer work (Kronwerk) to protect the city fortress to the north. It is one of the largest and best-preserved fortifications of its time in the region. After the dismantling of the fortress from 1871 onwards, the area was converted around 1900 into a park, which was named Luitpoldpark in honor of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria.

The monument zone "Queichkanal" includes not only the river course itself, but also the magnificent riverside development. Especially along the street "An 44" you can find impressive examples of late Wilhelminian architecture.

The Bad Dürkheim graduation tower, often referred to locally simply as "Gradierwerk", "Gradierbau" or even "Saline", is part of the spa facilities of the district town of Bad Dürkheim.

Water wheel and water fountain Water wheels and downstream pumping stations conveyed the brine into the roof structure to supply the Schwarzdorn with brine for the operation of the former graduation towers of the Philippshall saltworks. The reconstruction of a water wheel (5 m diameter, wheel rim made of 8 storage pairs and 32 buckets) was put into operation on April 20, 2013, to celebrate the uncovering of the Isenach. The water wheel is driven by a supply channel with water from the upper reaches of the Isenach (maximum 50 l/s). The amount of water and the height difference of 1.24 m are sufficient to set the undershot water wheel and a push rod system installed in 2014 with a subsequent double-piston pump in motion - colloquially called "Hin und Her" (Back and Forth). The Förderverein Gradierbau e.V. financed the push rod system. The water fountain, impounded by the stream as a basin, which is a maximum of 8 meters high, serves as a welcome. Both of these special features in the spa park, in addition to the graduation tower itself, are Station A on the cultural walking tour map. The Palatinate offers a diverse running landscape. You'll find routes traversing the vast Palatinate Forest, featuring unique sandstone rock formations and rolling hills. Many paths follow serene rivers and streams, while others extend into the region's renowned vineyards, providing a mix of natural and cultivated scenery. Elevations can vary significantly, with some routes offering challenging climbs up to 600 meters, like the Kalmit, providing panoramic views.

Are there running routes suitable for beginners or those looking for an easy run?

Yes, the Palatinate has numerous options for all fitness levels. Out of over 6,800 running routes, more than 760 are classified as easy. For a relatively flat and accessible run, consider the Neckarau Parkrun Start – Wooden Gazebo loop from Ludwigshafen am Rhein, which is about 5.5 km long. Another pleasant option is the Ebenberg Parkrun – Südpark Landau loop from Landau (Pfalz) Süd, a moderate 7.2 km path through urban green spaces.

What are some challenging running trails in the Palatinate?

For runners seeking a challenge, the Palatinate offers over 1,300 difficult routes. These often feature significant elevation gains and varied terrain. An example is the Naturfreundehaus Kandel – Naturfreundehaus Bienwald loop from Kandel, a demanding 32 km trail. Another challenging option is the Höningen Monastery Inn – Rahnenhof Naturefriends House loop from Carlsberg, which covers over 18 km with substantial elevation changes.

Can I find running routes that pass by interesting landmarks or natural features?

Absolutely. The Palatinate Forest is rich in unique geological formations, such as spectacular sandstone rock formations like the 'Devil's Table'. Many trails also lead past historical sites, including old castles and fortresses. For natural beauty, you might encounter gorges like the Karlstal Gorge or the Elendsklamm, and serene lakes such as Ungeheuersee. The Reiterwiesen Meadows – Landau Fortress Ruins loop from Landau (Pfalz) Hbf is a great example, leading past historical ruins.

Are there any running routes that are circular?

Many of the running routes in the Palatinate are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. This includes popular options like the Neckarau Parkrun Start – Wooden Gazebo loop from Ludwigshafen am Rhein and the Ebenberg Parkrun – Südpark Landau loop from Landau (Pfalz) Süd. The Tschifflik Pleasure Palace loop from Zweibrücken - Rosengarten is another excellent circular route.

What do other runners say about jogging in the Palatinate?

The running routes in the Palatinate are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars from over 5,300 reviews. Are there places to stop for refreshments along the running trails?

Yes, particularly within the Palatinate Forest, you'll find numerous 'forest taverns' (Waldgaststätten) along many trails. These offer a great opportunity to take a break, refuel, and enjoy local Palatinate cuisine. Some routes, like the Höningen Monastery Inn – Rahnenhof Naturefriends House loop from Carlsberg, even have inns directly in their names, indicating convenient refreshment stops.

What is the best time of year to go running in the Palatinate?

The Palatinate is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn are particularly popular for running. In spring, the forests come alive with fresh greenery, and in autumn, the foliage of the Palatinate Forest and vineyards offers spectacular colors. Yes, the hilly terrain of the Palatinate, with peaks reaching over 600 meters like the Kalmit, provides many opportunities for runs with rewarding panoramic views. From higher elevations, you can often see across the Rhine plain, the Odenwald, Kraichgau, and even the Black Forest on clear days. Routes that ascend to 'Heights' or 'Viewpoints' are good indicators, such as the Kaiser Wilhelm Heights – PWV Weilach Lodge loop from Hausen.

How extensive is the trail network for running in the Palatinate?

The Palatinate boasts an impressive and extensive network of trails. The Palatinate Forest alone features approximately 8,000 marked hiking trails, many of which are perfectly suitable for running. This vast network ensures a wide variety of routes, from short, easy loops to long, challenging endurance runs, allowing runners to explore different parts of this UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Are there any specific fitness trails or 'Trim-Dich-Pfad' in the Palatinate?

While the guide doesn't list specific 'Trim-Dich-Pfad' within the immediate Palatinate region, the concept of fitness trails with integrated stations for endurance, strength, and coordination training is present in the broader area, such as in Bad Marienberg (Westerwald). Many of the well-maintained forest paths in the Palatinate Forest, however, naturally lend themselves to versatile outdoor workouts.

Can I combine running with exploring the region's vineyards?

Absolutely. Beyond the dense forests, the Palatinate is famous for its vineyards, especially along the German Wine Route. Many running paths extend into these cultivated landscapes, offering a different scenic backdrop for your runs and allowing you to experience the region's rich viticultural heritage. These routes often provide gentler gradients compared to the forest's hilly sections.
