The castle was built in 1094 on the Vogteigut the monastery Bleidenstadt by Vogt Diether I, Klostervogt to Prüm in the Eifel, and his son Henry I. Henry II grew up here and at Castle Stahleck together with his stepbrother Hermann von Stahleck and was founded in 1138 by King Konrad III. raised to the count. Hermann von Stahleck married the only sister of King Konrad III, Gertrud von Schwaben and in 1142 became Rhineland Palatine. With the partition agreement of 1260 the house Katzenelnbogen divided into an older one (represented by Diether V.) and a younger line (represented by Eberhard I.), whereby the older line increased possessions in the lower county and the younger line increased possessions in the Upper county received. The design of the first castle complex is no longer determinable today, since in 1371 under Wilhelm II (older line) a complete new building was made. Even before their extinction in 1479 under Philip I gave the Katzenelnboger counts their ancestral castle as a residence. As heirs were the Landgraves of Hesse with Henry III. the new masters of Burg Katzenelnbogen. 1540 burned out the plant. In 1584 (by the Lords of the Leyen) and 1613 new buildings were built, which give the old castle today the appearance of a castle.
