East of Alexanderplatz, the "House of Teachers" was built between 1961 and 1964 on the site of the teachers' association building, which had been destroyed in the war. A striking feature of the 54-meter-tall concrete structure is the 125-meter-long "belly band"—a seven-meter-high frieze by Walter Womacka—that runs around the third and fourth floors. The motifs depicted scenes from social life in East Germany. Following renovations, the former House of Teachers now houses offices and commercial spaces.

The former border crossing on Friedrichstrasse is an attraction for visitors from Germany and abroad. The fact that hardly any of the original buildings remain at Checkpoint Charlie doesn't bother anyone.
