Here, the Chemnitz lives up to its name: Chemnitz, derived from the Slavic "Kamenica," which means "stone stream"... A truly stony little river.

The market square had been laid out since the first buildings were built in front of the church. Each of the houses around it has its own history. They are the so-called "ancestral houses" and form the town center. In 1511, 80 citizens of Burgstädt who lived in these ancestral houses were granted the right to brew by Duke Georg. In order to create fermentation space and storage space for the beer, underground cellars, so-called "Höhler", were built. The houses, mostly made of wood, fell victim to fires over time. Until 1700, the market square was very neglected and partly further polluted by the cattle markets. It was initially paved around the fountain trough. Then the steps of the higher houses were removed and heisten built in their place. This made it possible to lay a street around the market in 1864. It was only Mayor Dr. Roth who ensured the market's current clean appearance during his term of office from 1902 to 1924. The redesign of the market square was completed in 2008. The new fountain, made of Rochlitz porphyry, depicts several local legends of the town of Burgstädt. Source:https://www.rochlitzer-muldental.de/region-entdecken/orte/item/1636-burgstadt-1636

Another striking building in Burgstädt is the Seigerturm. It is a gate and gate tower from the churchyard to the market and, along with the church wall, served as a defensive wall. In the 16th century, clocks were installed in towns and communities that were clearly visible. Since the church did not yet have a tower at that time, a Seiger (clock) was installed on the gate tower in 1604. This is how the name Seigerturm came about. After the new church tower was built together with a clock in 1894, the Seigerturm clock was removed. Today, the Seigerturm has its clock again. In 1997, the tower was renovated.
