Originally this tower served as a staircase tower at the palace of the Dean of the Cathedral Canons (today the presbytery) in Rue Edgar Quinet. In 1907 the tower was dismantled stone by stone and offered for sale in Paris. A rich American patron, Jay Gould, acquired it and gifted it back to the city, which rebuilt it in 1927 on the island of Saint Laurent.

At the beginning of the 16th century, a hospital was founded on Saint Laurent island. The sisters' building, which is easily recognizable by its stepped gable, still dates from this period. The adjacent building replaced the ward in the 19th century, which was demolished in 1854. The dome was erected around 1770 and heavily rebuilt during the modernization of the hospital (1854-1870).

From the Voie Bressane greenway, there is a beautiful view of the circular brick tower, located north of the village. It is the last remaining structure of the Château de Saint-Germain.
