The Great Segeberger See was formed at the end of the last ice age around 12,000 years ago. The ice had pushed a terminal moraine and a thick layer of sand and gravel in front of it. As the ice thawed, the underlying salt went into solution and the overlying Diluvium sagged. This is how the troughing of the Segeberger See and the north-east adjoining Klüthsee was created. Since the border between the terminal moraine and the gravel surface lay just above the area where the salt had dissolved, the picture that still exists today emerged: the gravel plain breaks off steeply and in a straight line and thus forms the steep west bank of the lake. http://www.gesundheitspark.de/sp_138-rundgang-grosser-segeberger-see-dru.htm
