We did the climb from the Restonica valley in early July. Heavy rainfall in May caused exceptionally large snowfields below the couloir. Orientation and finding a way was therefore more difficult than under normal circumstances. In particular, the descent on what is actually the same path required a good sense of direction, very confusing, also due to randomly placed cairns that ended in dead ends below the couloir (sometimes on the mighty, too steep granite slabs, which abruptly bordered snowfields and forced to turn back... with then new attempts). In total we have 15km, 3200m difference in altitude (ascent, descent), 6.5 hours in motion and 11.5 hours total time (2 x 45min breaks, remaining time for photos, path search) needed. Tip: be sure to inquire about the snow situation beforehand. possibly Bring a toddle, a snow plate for sticks and a rope. Luckily the snow was very soft, so we didn't need all that. Sticks are mandatory!

Creno Lake teems with wildlife and is grazed by cattle. You can ride there with a pony or a horse, rented from the car park below. The lake is famous for its water lilies and when you couple that with the picturesque pine trees that surround it, this lake is truly a treasure to be found.

Apparently, the name pozzine was coined by botanist John Briquet in 1910 to designate bogs with deep pools. Pozzi is the Coriscan name of the well. This little corner of paradise deserves some time to enjoy it.

Lake Bastani is one of the highest lakes in Corsica above (2000m). It is a beautiful feature to study from the top of Mount Renoso and to visit and enjoy while hiking to or from that same peak.

Great place to stop off at the start of the tour. 🍕🍖🥓 Definitely try the Lonzo, which comes from the region! In my opinion the best in the region. A tour can also be booked with the donkey 🐴. A great experience especially for the children. And then the panorama and the shady, quiet, peaceful place on the lake, just gorgeous. If you walk to the end of the lake, a great mountain view of the sloping steep terrain.

Yes, Lac de Creno is an excellent choice for families. It offers an easy trail, and you can even rent ponies or horses from the car park below for a unique experience. The lake is known for its water lilies and is surrounded by beautiful pine trees.
Hiking conditions vary. The trail to Lac de Melo is well-marked but can involve challenging sections with chains and ladders, requiring appropriate footwear. The path from Melo to Lac de Capitello is steeper and more challenging, with sections requiring the use of hands and chains, making it unsuitable for those with vertigo. Lac de Bettaniella and Lac de Bastani also involve steep ascents and navigating boulder fields, requiring good fitness and sturdy shoes.
Lac de Melo, situated at 1,711 meters, is unique for its emerald green waters and lush vegetation, which is a rarity in Corsica. It's also the source of the Restonica river and is home to a unique bacterial species named after it. The hike offers stunning alpine pastures and comfortable picnicking spots.
Hiking to Lac de Capitello, located above Lac de Melo at 1,930 meters, is a strenuous but rewarding experience. It's Corsica's deepest natural lake, surrounded by immense granite slabs plunging into intense blue waters. The landscape is stark and dramatic, often frozen for over eight months. The path from Melo is very steep, with some sections requiring chains and hands-on climbing.
Lac de Creno is particularly special for its abundant water lilies, which bloom beautifully in June, and the picturesque pine trees that surround it. It's also a vibrant ecosystem teeming with wildlife and grazed by cattle. It offers an easy trail, making it ideal for a relaxed visit.

The best time to visit the high-altitude lakes like Melo and Capitello is typically from late spring to early autumn (June to October) when the snow has melted, and trails are more accessible. Many of these glacial lakes remain frozen for six to eight months of the year. For lower-altitude lakes like Creno, the water lilies bloom in June, offering a beautiful spectacle.
Swimming is generally prohibited in some lakes, such as Lac de Creno, to protect its biodiversity. For other high-altitude glacial lakes, while not explicitly prohibited everywhere, the water is extremely cold due to their elevation and the long periods they remain frozen, making swimming impractical for most.
