Crawford Lake is much more unusual than it first appears. Its upper and lower waters never fully mix, making it a rare meromictic lake, and the yearly sediment layers on the bottom preserve an incredibly detailed environmental record. A newly rebuilt boardwalk now circles the shoreline, with interpretive signs explaining the lake’s ecology, scientific importance and Indigenous history.
