This 23.9-mile (38.5 km) journey includes a notable 1448 feet (441 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 2 hours and 28 minutes to complete. You will cycle through tranquil lochside paths near Balloch, then transition to quiet single-track roads winding through gentle, mixed scenery of cattle, pine trees, and barley as you approach the historic sites.
Starting in Balloch, this popular route is predominantly paved, with approximately 21.2 km of asphalt and 17.0 km of other paved surfaces, making for a smooth ride for most of the way. However, be aware that it does include about 246 meters of unpaved sections, which might add a bit more challenge. The trail is suitable for those with good fitness, offering a peaceful and undemanding experience through varied terrain.
This loop is highly regarded as the most popular touring cycling route around Balloch, celebrated for its significant historical landmarks. You will pass the 15th-century Cawdor Castle, famous for its literary connection to Shakespeare's *Macbeth* and its impressive gardens. The route also takes you by the poignant Culloden Battlefield, site of the last major battle on British soil, and the impressive 29-arch Culloden Viaduct, Scotland's longest masonry viaduct.
