One of the greats. Hikes to Slioch take you to a mountain of incredible majesty, sandwiched between the grandeur of Torridon and the great wilderness of the Fisherfield Forest. The mountain rears up above the famously beautiful shores of Loch Maree like some gigantic, ancient stronghold. This astonishing vision is the subject of countless Highland postcards and calendars, such is its splendour.

An ancient and complex mountain set amongst staggering surroundings

Slioch is a complex massif of alternating layers, gorgeous lochans and fine ridges. Its steep fortifications are impenetrable from most directions, but breaches can be found to the east. Walking routes to Slioch take advantage of this, ascending to Coire Tuill Bhain and ascending one of two ridges that lead to the summit.

As mountain-top panoramas go, few can rival it. To the south west, Torridon’s behemoths rise on tier after tier of primeval sandstone. In the opposite direction is the land known as ‘the Great Wilderness’, a glorious tangle of peaks and ridges that represents some of the most remote and dramatic mountainscapes in the UK. The view down island-studded Loch Maree and beyond to the Trotternish ridge of Skye is sensational.

Kinlochewe’s assortment of chalets, B&Bs and rentals makes the village an obvious base for adventures on Slioch. Torridon is also within driving distance where guest houses, a youth hostel, campsites and a grand hotel constitute your options. The closest rail link is Achnasheen.

In winter conditions, Slioch’s complex form becomes the realm of experienced and appropriately equipped mountaineers only.

    Hiking

Over the steely waters of Loch Maree, Slioch’s craggy western face rises like a castle keep. Its eastern flanks are a more complex arrangement of bealachs, ridges and coires, but the isolation of the mountain as a whole ensures the summit views are epic, encompassing the Fisherfield Forest, the Torridon mountains and the full length of Loch Maree.
