This 7.3-mile (11.7 km) loop takes about 3 hours and 3 minutes to complete, with a gentle elevation gain of 277 feet (84 metres). You will find varied terrain, from well-worn paths to rougher, sometimes muddy, sections along the lochside, through woodland, and across moorland. The trail offers stunning views of the loch, often described as mirror-like in calm conditions, nestled within the picturesque Yarrow Valley and surrounded by rolling hills.
While the circuit generally avoids the main road, be aware that some short sections run alongside it. The trail incorporates parts of the Southern Upland Way, ensuring a good walking experience. Good fitness is recommended due to the length and potential for uneven ground, though many paths are easily accessible. There are often art installations displayed along the loch shore, adding an unexpected visual element to your journey.
This area is rich in both natural beauty and historical significance. You can explore notable features like St Mary's Kirkyard, an ancient burial ground, and the historic Tibbie Shiels Inn, an 18th-century coaching inn once frequented by the Border poet James Hogg. The trail also passes a monument dedicated to Hogg and offers glimpses of the historic Ettrick Forest, a place tied to figures like William Wallace.
