In the 12th century, the church was built in Romanesque style. It was completely burned out by the bombing in 1945. Part of the church was renovated again.

St. Bartholomew's Church is essentially a late Romanesque, cruciform, flat-roofed basilica built of quarry stone. A consecration of this church is recorded in 1215. In 1300, the church was elevated to a collegiate church. In April 1945, a few weeks before the end of World War II, St. Bartholomew's Church was severely damaged in air raids on the town of Zerbst.
