Duke Franz Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1697-1764), a passionate hunter, had a hunting lodge built in Rodach by the Ansbach court architect Johann David Steingruber, which was occupied in 1749. Built in the Margrave style, which actually dominated church architecture, the "Princely Hunting Lodge" is a unique secular building.

The Duke died here in 1764 during the autumn hunt. One of his successors, Duke Ernst II (1844-1893), sold the castle to the city of Rodach in 1874, which converted it into a school.

The building was given a new purpose in 1982 as the "Guest House".
