Erkner was first mentioned in 1579 under the name "Arckenow" in the Rüdersdorfer church register as the residence of a fisherman ("Wednesday s post converses, Pauli had Hans the fisherman baptized in Arckenow and is called Maria."). The name Erkenau - Erkener - Erkner developed from this field name. By 1701, the fishing settlement in Arckenow had only seven houses.

This changed when a post office was opened in Erkner in 1712 for the new post line from Berlin to Frankfurt (Oder).

Today's town hall used to be Carl Bechstein's summer residence. Various buildings are named after him in Erkner: e.g. the Bechstein high school. And a large restaurant in the center of the village is called for the same reason: Bechstein. The Bechstein piano brand is world famous.
