Brilliantly signposted and varied bridleway trail that avoids the road through Hortham village. You'll ride along field margins and along dirt singletrack through Hortham Woods (most delightful in April and May with the bluebells). A short and steep track then takes you from the field to rejoin Hortham Lane to cross the motorway bridge.

Some "Public Footpath" signs have recently gone up, especially if you're heading east. Don't be deterred, it really is a bridleway and you'll soon get to signs confirming it. Spectacularly muddy today, losing grip even on MTB tyres

28mm slick tyres on a tourer were slow going but OK. A few warm days after heavy rain meant it wasn't very muddy. You need to be able to lift your bike over step-over gates.
