Hard Knott Summit

Hiking

5.0

(38)

Hikes up Hard Knott are the kind that take far longer than their distance suggests. Why? Because this lumpy Wainwright sits amongst extraordinary landscapes and clear weather provides endless views.

This fell rises immediately to the north of the eponymous pass, one of the steepest roads in the country. If your car is up to it, driving this narrow and rather exhilarating pass is a worthwhile start to your hike. The road offers parking opportunities too and is a common start point.

Depending on where along the road you begin your walk, you can technically bag the summit and be back in under an hour. There are plenty of nearby crags to add in for a longer hike including Yew Bank, Harter Fell and Grey Friar. Hiking up Hard Knott is rugged and rocky but there’s nothing technical here.

From the summit, enjoy views north to the horseshoe of Scafell Pike, Great End and Bow Fell as well as the delightfully named Crinkle Crags. Campsites, youth hostels and hotels abound in the area, with Ambleside just to the east.

    Hiking

I have a real soft spot for Hard Knott! I absolutely love the view to the Scafell range from here and I once hiked from Hard Knott all the way up to Esk Pike without seeing another person all morning. This area really is beautiful and, at 1,801 feet (549 m), Hard Knott itself is quite straight forward to hike from Hardknott Pass. Many see it as a bonus that you can drive up most of the ascent and start the climb from around the 1,300-foot (400 m) mark.

    Hiking

I had a wonderful outing on Harter Fell. Parking down in the bottom of the valley at Jubilee Bridge I took in the Roman Fort and then went up to to Hard Knott Hill and then over to Harter Fell. All on a sunny blue sky day. The roman fort was very interesting and the views all round were great. The views from Harter Fell topped the lot...plus the little scramble to get to the true summit of course.
