    Hiking

Along the Old Spanish Trail, there’s a small bench tucked under eucalyptus trees where you get a clear view of Mt. Diablo. It’s a good spot to pause, catch your breath, and take in the landscape.

Coal Mine Ridge Preserve loop from Los Trancos Woods

    190m

The Coal Mine Ridge Preserve loop from Los Trancos Woods offers a delightful mix of scenery, guiding you through dense tanoak and bay woodlands before opening up into expansive meadows with grand oak trees. You'll follow well-maintained singletrack paths, like the historic Old Spanish Trail, which can reward you with sweeping views of the Peninsula and even San Francisco on a clear day. This moderate 4.6-mile (7.4 km) hike, with its 631 feet (192 metres) of elevation gain, provides a serene experience that feels surprisingly remote for its suburban setting, making it a great choice for a peaceful outing.

When planning your visit, remember that the preserve is privately owned but accessible to the public, and its tranquil atmosphere is maintained by a general restriction on dogs and bicycles. The trails are well-kept, but autumn brings fallen leaves and winter rains can create small streams, so dress appropriately. Allow about 2 hours and 8 minutes for this loop, and consider an early start to ensure a good parking spot at the trailhead, especially on busy days.

Historically, Coal Mine Ridge gets its name from a low-grade coal mine that operated here in 1855, later buried by a landslide. The Old Spanish Trail within the preserve is particularly notable, believed to have been used by Spanish soldiers in 1823, adding a layer of historical intrigue to your hike. This preserve stands out as a hidden gem, offering a quiet alternative to more crowded trails while still providing diverse landscapes and a sense of natural immersion.
