An anecdote explains how the people of Dietfurt got their nickname „Chinesen“ (Chinese) and thus their Chinese Carnival:
Once, the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt noted that the people of Dietfurt were paying too few feudal dues and taxes; he sent his treasurer to investigate the matter.
Informed of the treasurer's mission, the people of Dietfurt closed their city gates and denied him entry.
Angrily, the treasurer reported to his bishop that the people of Dietfurt seemed like „Chinesen“ (Chinese) to him – they fortified themselves behind their walls and took no notice of a bishop's treasurer.
