The Fort Sao Jose on Portinho is not officially recognized, but nothing is being done to prevent it. This 178 square meter country is called the smallest state in the world with just 3 inhabitants. It was originally an island off Funchal, but is now connected to the harbor wall. Somehow the little island is quite funny and also worth a visit.

The Principality of Pontinha is a micronation of approximately 178 m2 on the rock formation of the former Forte de São José, approximately 70 meters off the coast of Funchal in Madeira.
