Embark on a hike through the ancient city of Castro, a route that winds through archaeological ruins with a mysterious and archaic charm. This trail, historically rated as easy, covers 2.2 miles (3.5 km) with an elevation gain of 201 feet (61 metres), typically taking about 58 minutes to complete. As you explore, you will encounter ancient city walls and vegetation reclaiming urban spaces, blending exploration and archaeology with nature.
Before you plan your visit, be aware that as of August 2025, the site has been reported as closed for maintenance. The paths are currently disturbed, unmaintained, and often unmarked, which could lead you to closed buildings and present unexpected difficulties. If you were to explore the underground structures, good shoes and torches would be recommended, but please respect any closure notices.
The ancient city of Castro holds deep historical and archaeological significance, once serving as the capital of a rich duchy with roots in prehistoric and Etruscan times. It later became the seat of an independent duchy under the Farnese family. Archaeological excavations have uncovered Messapian walls and a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Minerva, with artifacts displayed in the Archaeological Museum. The city is also famously linked to Virgil's Aeneid, described as Aeneas' first port of call in Italy.
