After the town mills at Mühlengraben were destroyed in a fire in 1882, the mill deputation decided in 1896 to use the water power of the ditch to generate electricity so that a tram could be powered. Along with the power station, the weir system and the quay walls were also rebuilt. The plant went into operation on April 27, 1903, supplying the new tram and 138 house connections with around 800,000 kWh of direct current.
