Embark on a challenging 7.0-mile (11.2 km) loop hike to Monte Legnone, the highest peak in the province of Lecco, starting from Rifugio Roccoli Lorla. This difficult route involves a significant 3748 feet (1142 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 7 hours and 23 minutes to complete. You will begin by winding through a dense larch forest, passing Alpe Agrogno, before the path becomes steeper and more exposed, featuring zigzags and thin ridges. Fixed ropes and steps aid your climb through rocky sections, leading you past Porta del Merli and Bivacco Silvestri before the final, technical push to the summit, where a spectacular 360-degree panorama awaits.
This demanding hike requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and alpine experience. The trail is not recommended if there is snow or ice, and strong northerly winds can add to the challenge. Bivacco Silvestri, located at 2146 meters, offers a potential resting point before you tackle the final ascent. The return journey typically follows the same route back to Rifugio Roccoli Lorla, so be prepared for a descent that mirrors your climb.
Monte Legnone stands out as the westernmost point of the Orobian Alps, recognizable by its distinctive pyramid shape. From its summit, you can enjoy extensive views across the Alps, from Monviso to Ortles, including prominent peaks like Disgrazia, the Val Masino, and the Mera Valley, with the magnificent expanse of Lake Como below. Keep an eye out for ibexes, which are sometimes spotted near the tree line. The broader region also features historical fortifications from the Cadorna Line of World War I, adding a layer of history to the natural beauty.
