The second-highest hill in Scotland’s beautiful Pentlands, Carnethy Hill makes for a fun expedition and can easily be bagged in combination with neighbouring summits, like the region’s highest, Scald Law. The hill is also part of the Carnethy 5, a yearly running race heading to the tops of five Pentland peaks.

You can find parking in numerous places nearby, the easiest being the ranger centre to the east of Glencourse Reservoir. From here, you can first ascend Turnhouse Hill with its views of the Firth of Forth before continuing on to the summit of Carnethy. Rising to 1,880 feet (573 m), there are some steep sections on the ascent but approaching from the north is a largely gradual affair on grassy terrain.

When you reach the summit, the views along the Pentland Hills are fantastic, particularly of Scald Law to the south west. You can bag Carnthey’s summit throughout the year and it’s suitable for children in good weather. Take great care in any snow and be mindful of fast-changing conditions.
