Germany's oldest garden city was built between 1907 and 1915 as a workers' settlement for Ilse Bergbau AG in Senftenberg. Architect Georg Heinsius von Mayenburg designed 78 houses in 15 different types and eventually consolidated them as the Marga Garden City. The director of Ilse Bergabu AG, Gottlob Schumann, wanted to use these livable factory settlements to both bind his employees to the company and improve their quality of life. The garden city was named after the Marga mine in Brieske, which was opened in 1906 and named after Schumann's daughter, who died in childhood.
