Embark on a challenging journey along the Backbone Trail from Mishe Mokwa to Ray Miller, a difficult hiking route spanning 16.9 miles (27.2 km) through the Santa Monica Mountains. You will experience diverse terrain, from sticky clay near Mishe Mokwa to hardpacked gravel and rock surfaces as you climb towards Sandstone Peak and traverse Boney Ridge with its dramatic crags. This route offers spectacular ocean views, including the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands, especially from viewpoints like Inspiration Point, making the 2078 feet (633 metres) of elevation gain a rewarding effort. Expect to spend around 8 hours and 9 minutes completing this demanding hike.
When planning your visit, be aware that the trail can become muddy after heavy rains, and there is a possibility of landslides or wash-outs in certain sections. Cell service can be poor, particularly around the Ray Miller section, so it is wise to download your route beforehand. Parking is generally available at the Mishe Mokwa trailhead, and you can also find parking near the La Jolla Canyon area for the Ray Miller end. Always check local conditions before heading out.
This section of the Backbone Trail is notable for its varied landscapes within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. As you hike, you will pass through meadows and rugged sections, showcasing the unique geology and ecosystems of the region. The trail’s path along Boney Ridge, with its distinctive crags, provides a memorable visual landmark and a sense of the area's wild character. It is a prime example of the extensive network of trails that connect the diverse environments of this coastal mountain range.
