Construction of the port began in May 1938. Work was stopped in the spring of 1943, although large parts, including 3 warehouses, the port railway system and the connection to the PX industrial railway, had already been completed. However, the connections to the Elster-Saale Canal and the Karl-Heine Canal were unfinished. As a result, the port was not accessible by water until 2015.

Two transshipment port basins were planned, each 1000 meters long, 90 meters wide and six meters deep, as well as two industrial ports north of the transshipment basins. 😊👊🏻
