Embark on a moderate hike through the Ligurian Apennines on the Monte Aiona, Passo dell'Incisa e Rifugio Prato Mollo trail. This route covers 5.2 miles (8.3 km) with an elevation gain of 1334 feet (407 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 22 minutes to complete. You will experience a diverse landscape, transitioning from dense beech forests to open clearings and extensive meadows, including the beautiful Prati di Monte Nero. The trail also features unique rocky outcrops of ophiolites and the distinctive "bare back" of Monte Aiona, characterized by ancient peridotitic rocks.
This moderate route requires good fitness, though the paths are mostly accessible. It is advisable to carry sufficient water, as natural sources can be seasonal. The area is generally dog-friendly; however, you should keep your dog on a leash. You can enjoy these trails in all seasons; the forest sections offer shade in summer, while autumn and winter bring the possibility of snow, adding to the scenic beauty.
The trail system is a significant part of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, with stages 33 and 34 passing through this area. You will encounter the historical Passo dell'Incisa, a mountain pass that was strategically important during Roman times. A unique feature of Monte Aiona is its magnetic anomaly; the ferrous minerals in the peridotitic rocks can interfere with traditional compasses, so relying on GPS for navigation is recommended. Rifugio Prato Mollo, located at 1503 metres, serves as an important stop, offering accommodation and services for those looking to extend their adventure.
