Birthplace of San Galgano, Chiusdino has a medieval historic center, with narrow streets and views of the surrounding hills.

Great view from up here. Whole nice bar in the central piazza.

Chiusdino is a wonderful medieval village located in the Merse Valley among the Metalliferous Hills. Its origins date back to the Lombard domination of Tuscany between 568 and 569.
The town still retains its medieval appearance and some sections of the double city walls. It is also possible to find medieval houses, including the alleged house of San Galgano (Galgano Guidotti), where the saint is believed to have been born around 1150.

Embark on a challenging touring bicycle adventure with the "from the Borgo di Montieri to Ciciano — Ring tour." This difficult route spans 41.1 miles (66.1 km) and features a significant elevation gain of 3809 feet (1161 metres), requiring very good fitness. You can expect to complete this ring tour in about 4 hours and 49 minutes, cycling through the captivating Tuscan countryside with panoramic views of ancient forests and rolling hills. Be prepared for substantial climbs and descents, as some segments may be unpaved and require you to dismount and push your bike.

Planning your ride requires acknowledging the hard difficulty of this trail. The Montieri region offers a mix of paved and unpaved "white roads," so ensure your touring bicycle is suitable for varied terrain. While specific trailhead access details are not provided, the route begins and ends in the Borgo di Montieri, a charming medieval village. Always check local conditions before you go, especially regarding weather, as unpaved sections can become more challenging.

This trail offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich natural and historical context of Tuscany's Maremma region. Cycling in Montieri allows you to discover a diverse landscape, including areas with ancient mining sites, such as those found in the Geominerario delle Colline Metallifere Grossetane park. The area is well-regarded by cyclists for its winding, low-traffic roads and varied terrain, making this demanding route a perfect choice for experienced riders seeking both a physical challenge and stunning natural beauty away from typical tourist paths.
