The Colle del Carro Trail (532) offers a demanding alpine hiking experience in Gran Paradiso National Park. You will cover 7.1 miles (11.4 km) and ascend a significant 3153 feet (961 metres), making this a difficult route that takes around 5 hours and 58 minutes to complete. Expect diverse alpine scenery as you hike, passing an old military barracks and crossing snowfields and moraines. From the Colle du Carro mountain pass, you can enjoy views towards the Refuge du Carro in France. This trail requires good physical preparation and sure-footedness for its rugged terrain.
Before you head out, be aware that the route features equipped sections with fixed aids, similar to a via ferrata. For your safety, it is recommended to use a harness and lanyards on the second and last equipped portions of the trail. The presence of snowfields and moraines means conditions can vary, so always check local reports and be prepared for changing terrain.
