"Kendel (from mhd. Kandel / kanel / kenel = tube, gutter, water pipe) in the Lower Rhine region is the name given to the winding lowlands in the flat terrain, which were created as old stream channels of the strongly meandering and overgrown original Rhine.
Together with the elevations of the terrain surrounded by islands like islands, called the Donk on the Lower Rhine, the Kendel form a characteristic landscape element of the Lower Rhine lowlands. "
