Embark on a difficult mountain biking adventure through the Foreste Casentinesi National Park with the Poggio Lastra, Pietrapazza, Monte Carpano, Sentiero del Lupo, Rio Petroso loop. This challenging 19.1-mile (30.7 km) route demands a certain level of preparation and experience, featuring a significant 3302 feet (1006 metres) of elevation gain. You will navigate diverse terrain, from wide forest tracks and gravel roads to natural surfaces and singletrack, all while enjoying wide panoramic views. The trail passes scenic spots like the church of Pietrapazza and the crest of Monte Carpano, offering a rewarding ride that typically takes around 3 hours and 25 minutes to complete.

To plan your visit, be aware that this trail is rated difficult due to its varied surfaces, significant climbs, and descents. While the initial segment from Poggio alla Lastra to Monte Carpano is relatively easy, the route becomes more demanding as you progress, especially with a long, sometimes steep descent towards Rio Salso. The trail is part of the "In bici nel Parco" MTB18 volume, indicating its recognized status for mountain biking. Ensure you are well-prepared for a rugged experience on ancient mule tracks.

This loop offers a rich blend of natural beauty and historical significance within the national park. You will encounter the ancient and restored village of Rio Salso and several 19th-century stone bridges that tell tales of the area's past. A notable feature is the section known as "Sentiero del Lupo" (Wolf's Path). Consider a detour to the Molino delle Cortine, a beautifully renovated 16th-century mill complex, for a glimpse into local history.
