The detour to the viewpoints is a must, not just for the Fred Feuerstein and Barney Rubble among you. The Donnerkuhle quarry is part of the GeoPark Ruhrgebiet (information boards provide further information). Here, dolomite stone is mined, which you can watch live (except of course the blasting).

Hiking
If the sprinklers do not blow up anymore. When the diggers stop digging. When the loaders stop charging. When there are no stones left in this quarry. Then, yes, then the huge quarry Donnerkuhle will be a 80 meter deep groundwater lake. People will walk along its shores, do water sports on its surface, and perhaps sip espresso in cafés. By 2040 at the latest, that may be reality. At least it is contractually defined as part of the reclamation of the quarry. Then, when the company Lhoist Germany Rheinkalk left the quarry Donnerkuhle. If the mining permit has expired.
