By the time you reach the middle station from Winkl, you have basically only crossed the forest, then it "opens" and you can already see the destination. Contrary to some statements about this hike, you do not need a head for heights to do it. It's always uphill and you need to be in good physical condition, but there aren't any dangerous spots unless it's going to rain. After two days, it was still a bit wet and slippery in the forest, you have to be sure-footed. From the middle station, there are often steps up, steep but not dangerous.
