The vineyard wall on the Vineyard Mountain was built for three reasons: to protect the sensitive vines from the north wind, to relieve the vineyard soil from the excess iron sandstone and to form a barricade against unwanted animals from the higher forest.

Hiking

The 'Wijnmuur', a unique 1.5-kilometer-long stacked wall, and the terraces on the southern flank of the Wijngaardberg are not relics of medieval wine culture but of a vineyard (30 hectares) that turned Wezemaal into a real wine village from 1814 to circa 1845 ; however, there is an early 19th century depiction of the vineyard, without terraces.
