"... In 1852, the transport of railway carriages across the Rhine began between Homberg and Ruhrort (hence the name: Homberg-Ruhrort Railway Ferry). For technical reasons, a ferry was chosen instead of a railway bridge to connect the railway networks of the Lower Rhine's left and right banks. With the help of English engineers, two lifting towers were built to overcome the difference in elevation between the railway stations and the Rhine and to safely load the carriages onto the steam-powered ferry pontoons. ..."
