    Mountain biking

Monte Prado is the highest mountain in Tuscany. It offers a wonderful view over all the Apuan Alps. Reaching it by MTB is only possible with an hour of portage from the Focerella pass followed by a long descent on the ridge towards Monte Vecchio and Monte Cella.

    Hiking

Monte Prado, or Prato, (2054m a.s.l.) is located on the major watershed of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, halfway between Passo Pradarena and Passo Radici. This area has been included in the Parco dell'Alto Appennino Reggíano (Parco del Gigante) since 1988, due to its high naturalistic value.
The local climate is poorly documented. The average annual temperature is around 5'C and the average rainfall is around 200Omrn. Precipitation is mostly snow and occurs between November and April, while the snow melts from May until the beginning of summer, depending on the differences in topography and exposure.

Monte Prado, Rifugio Bargetana e Battisti – loop tour

    930m

Embark on the Monte Prado, Rifugio Bargetana e Battisti loop tour, a difficult hike spanning 11.6 miles (18.7 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3062 feet (933 metres). This challenging route typically takes around 6 hours and 55 minutes to complete, demanding very good fitness and sure-footedness. You will traverse diverse terrain, from ancient beech and white fir forests to vast green prairies and rocky alpine paths. The trail leads you to the summit of Monte Prado, Tuscany's highest mountain, offering expansive views of the Apuan Alps and Monte Cusna. You will also encounter the picturesque Lago della Bargetana, a clear mountain lake reflecting the surrounding peaks. Expect to navigate rocky sections, grassy expanses, and blueberry fields, with glacial formations visible on Monte Prado's northern slopes. From the summit, if conditions are clear in June, you might even spot the Tyrrhenian Sea and Corsica. The autumn months, from late September to mid-October, bring vibrant colors to the landscape. You may also spot marmots and mouflons in certain areas. This route requires sturdy shoes and some alpine experience, as parts of the terrain can be technical or hazardous. Prepare for a rewarding journey through high-altitude pastures and heathlands, where rare Arctic-alpine flora thrives among cliffs and scree slopes. The trail offers a remarkable transition from dense forests at lower altitudes to open alpine environments. This loop connects two important mountain huts, Rifugio Bargetana and Rifugio Cesare Battisti, providing convenient stopping points. Rifugio Battisti, located at 1765 meters near Lama Lite and Lake Bargetana, is a welcoming refuge offering accommodation and refreshment, making it a strategic stopover for multi-day excursions. The area is part of the Parco dell'Alto Appennino Reggíano, recognized for its high natural value since 1988. The Rifugio Battisti, inaugurated in 1925, features a poignant inscription that speaks to the tranquility of the place: "Here the silence of the dawn lasts all day, please linger in this place."
