Hohenberg Castle was built in the 13th century by Dietrich von Hohenberg, son of the ministerialis Leutold von Hohenstaff (or later Leutold von Altenburg). With the construction of the castle, Dietrich, alongside his brother Heinrich, became the founder of the Hohenberger lineage, which in turn was part of the Hohenstaff-Altenburg-Hohenberg dynasty.
