Ernst Barlach (1870–1938) was one of the most important Expressionist artists. His works combine powerful simplicity with profound humanity and spiritual expression.

Barlach opposed war and pathos and sought the essence of human emotion in his figures—inner experience rather than outward splendor.

The museum is located in Ernst Barlach's "Old Father's House" in Ratzeburg, where he spent his childhood and youth. The exhibition is spread over two floors. You might wonder if the numerous bronze sculptures are originals, and perhaps you've seen some of them elsewhere. Well, they are original casts, and sometimes, for example, one plaster mold was used to make a hundred casts. And one of them is now here.

With a multimedia exhibition concept, the museum combines traditional works such as bronzes, drawings, and woodcuts with interactive formats (digital timeline, app, VR/AR, etc.).
