The Commandery of Gruitrode is an important cultural-historical heritage in Gruitrode, in the municipality of Oudsbergen. Until 1801, the commandery was one of the twelve commanderies within the Biesen bailiff of the Teutonic Order and was therefore subordinate to the grand commander in Alden Biesen. The commandery consisted of a castle separated by a moat and a square farm.

Since 2016, the location has been fully owned by the municipality of Oudsbergen, which is committed to the repurposing of the site.
The municipality aims to develop the entire site in phases in harmony with the village center and the surrounding nature.

Hiking

The farm and brewery are currently under scaffolding, the area is being redeveloped and a new hall and parking lot are being built. Then the commandery will really be the gateway to the Dune Belt. And in 2026, the castle will be restored. In addition, the original moats are being restored.
