The Canal loop is a fantastic mountain biking trail, not a road cycling route, offering an engaging ride through diverse terrain. You'll navigate singletrack and dirt surfaces, enjoying fast, flowing sections along the lakeshore before encountering more technical challenges, including "gnar and roots," after the canal bridge. Expect scenic overlooks of Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley, and the Canal as you pedal through lush oak and hickory forest.
This moderate 44.3-mile (71.3 km) route, with 2496 feet (761 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 3 hours and 33 minutes to complete. It's a popular choice for mountain bikers, especially on weekends, so arriving early is a good idea. While no specific permits are required, ensure your bike is suited for rugged off-road conditions.
Considered the "jewel of the mountain biking crown" in Land Between the Lakes, the Canal loop provides a varied riding experience. You'll find an 11-mile singletrack loop with additional connector trails, allowing for shorter options. A highlight for many is the thrilling downhill section that begins at the radio tower, adding an extra dose of excitement to your ride.
