It is a shell tower, which is closed with wooden boarding on the side facing the city.
The gate was provided with a portcullis and secured the outer ring of fortifications to the Hanau and Mainz areas on the other side of the Kinzig.
Painted frescoes from the 16th century were found inside the archway - Jesus on the cross with Mary and John. Unfortunately they were painted over in 1995!
