Hiking

Stacked stone towers also have different meanings in different cultures. According to Greek mythology, the stone towers are associated with Hermes, the god of travellers. In Scandinavian countries, the cairns serve as protection against trolls and as landmarks on the paths in foggy weather. The Inuit used them to hunt reindeer, and in some Buddhist cultures the stone towers are considered sacred. In western cultures, however, they are intended more for navigation, since the weather can change quickly even in the Alps.
