It commemorates the hunt by citizens of Celle for escapes from a concentration camp transport. The transport of the concentration camp prisoners was damaged on 8 April 1945 in an air raid on Celle. Many prisoners were killed, some fled to the Neustädter Holz. Not only the SS, but also the police and citizens of Celle took part in the search and hunt for the refugees.

The Trift facilities in Celle are a pretty park with extensive meadows and a playground. Directly behind the park is the Celle prison, the castle-like building was built between 1710 and 1730.
