The statue of the fearless dock worker expresses the courageous act of the men and women who went on strike. In 1951, artist Mari Andriessen asked the Haarlem carpenter and contractor Willem Termetz to pose for his statue. Termetz and Andriessen were probably in the resistance together. Termetz's heavy, supple physique probably had the appearance that Andriessen wanted for his statue.
