The origin of the maritime hospital can be found in 1854. That year, children were entrusted by Doctor Paul-Henry-Antoine Perrochaud to the widow Duhamel de Groffliers. The latter takes them twice a day to the beach to bathe them. Quickly, these children recover. The widow Marie-Anne Brillard, “Marianne Tout Alone” also widowed after seeing her family decimated by cholera. Living in the square, she takes in eight scrofulous (tuberculosis) children whom she takes in a car pulled by a donkey. They also heal quickly.
