The Mutte also differed in size from the Tjalk. While the latter was about 14 m long and up to 4 m wide, the Mutte had a length of approx. 9 to 11m and a width of about 3.20 m to 3.50 m. The Tjalk was generally round-bellied at bow and stern. The Mutte, on the other hand, was both round- and pointed-bellied. For the pointed Mutte, the motto was "less cargo, more speed".

The highlight is on the Splitting Kanal, shortly before the von velen facility

Muttschiff = peat boat of the early settlers

The Muttschiff served the settlers of Papenburg for centuries as a means of transport for the

extracted peat and as a watercraft on the canals and the Ems. This ship, similar to the Dutch Tjalk, was a typical flat-bottomed ship. Only the shallow water depth in the canals that run through the town of Papenburg made a shallow draft of the Muttschiffe necessary, i.e. a ship without a keel.

The Muttschiffe plied the Papenburg canals until the 1960s, after which they finally disappeared from the cityscape.
