Perched atop Castle Hill, an ancient Permian lava stream rising 411 meters above sea level, Ruiny Zamku Tenczyn are the evocative remains of a medieval fortress in the village of Rudno, Poland. Located within the scenic Polish Jura, approximately 24 kilometers west of Krakow, this historical site was once the powerful seat of the Tęczyński family and offers a glimpse into Poland's rich past. As a prominent landmark in the Garb Tenczyński region, it stands as a testament to centuries of history and architectural evolution.

Visitors are consistently drawn to the castle's profound historical significance and its picturesque setting. The blend of Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements, even in its ruined state, provides a compelling experience. Many appreciate the opportunity to explore the impressive Nawojowa Tower, which often hosts historical exhibitions and provides a sightseeing platform with extensive views of the surrounding Polish Jura and the Dulowska Forest. The castle's nickname, "Little Wawel," hints at its former grandeur and the admiration it once commanded.

Before visiting, it's helpful to know about access options. While a 3-kilometer gravel driveway leads to the main gate, many find it more enjoyable to use the lower parking lot and walk a pleasant 0.6-kilometer path through the forest. For those interested in the Tenczyn Castle seasonal visiting information, checking local event schedules can enhance the experience, especially during warmer months when events are more frequent.

Exploring the castle grounds offers a unique experience, allowing visitors to imagine the lives of the Tęczyński family and even the Teutonic knights imprisoned here by King Władysław Jagiełło after the Battle of Grunwald. The well-preserved 15th-century gatehouse and the two cylindrical towers of the upper ward are particularly notable, showcasing the castle's enduring architectural strength. The expansive views from various points around the site provide a sense of the strategic importance and natural beauty of this historical location.

If sightseeing is not possible, you can walk around the castle at the foot of the walls. There are several places where there are nice views of the surrounding towns and the Tenczyn forest. You can get to the main gate by a 3km driveway on a gravel road, but a much better option for me was to leave my equipment at the lower parking lot and walk up 0.6km on a road through the forest. I highly recommend it. MC
